Among all of the elements that set the scene in the Greek refugee camp, the sound of Nadim's rebab (a bowed instrument) affects Nuri the most. In this passage, Nuri uses a metaphor to describe Nadim's playing:
I remained perched on the step beside him as he picked up the rebab and began to play again, a slow quiet melody that trickled through the air in deep waves.
