An abbreviated name for the “League for the Independence of Việt Nam,” a revolutionary socialist party and army founded and led by Hồ Chí Minh. The Việt Minh fought for Việt Nam’s independence from France and Japan and secured this independence in 1954, after which it took control of the government of North Việt Nam.
