Mother Character Analysis

Hannah’s mother is an unnamed enslaved woman whom the master enslaves on his estate of Lindenhurst. When Hannah was still a baby, the master sold her mother to an enslaver in Mississippi, who subsequently transferred her to the service of his daughter, who lived in Maryland. There, Hannah’s mother met a free Black man with whom she escaped to freedom in New Jersey and whom she subsequently married. Hannah and her mother are reunited after Hannah’s own escape to New Jersey.
