The Book of Negroes

Colonel Baker Character Analysis

Colonel Baker is one of Malcolm Waters’s associates in the British military. He tells Aminata about Britain’s agreement to grant freedom to enslaved people who aided the Loyalist cause in the Revolutionary War, and he offers to help her relocate to Nova Scotia, a British colony where she can live as a free woman, if she helps the British compile a registry of Black Loyalists. Aminata works tirelessly for Baker and Waters, and she is appalled when they leave for England without telling her or securing her passage to Nova Scotia.
