Explanation and Analysis:

In The Boys in the Boat Brown’s writing style is direct, detailed, and engaging. While the nonfiction story is plot-driven, Brown manages to cover heavily trodden territory—such as the lead-up to World War II or the Great Depression—in a way that makes events the reader is already familiar with seem novel. In order to communicate the beauty and pain of rowing to the reader, the vast majority of whom have never sat in a shell, Brown makes frequent use of figurative language.
