Bernice is a young woman Holden meets in the Lavender Room, the nightclub inside the Edmont Hotel. Bernice is there with two friends and is uninterested in Holden, though she agrees to dance with him when he asks. Before long, Holden gets annoyed with Bernice and her friends because they’re obsessed with the prospect of spotting movie stars in the city, but he continues to pass the time with them until they leave, sticking him with the bill and not even offering to pay for the drinks they had before he arrived.
