Teachers and parents! Our Teacher Edition on The City of Ember makes teaching easy.
An unnamed woman who was one of the original residents of Ember. Lina, Doon, and Poppy find her handwritten journal abandoned in the cave where the river ends and read her account. They discover that the woman, like all the original residents, was over 60 years old, single, and was assigned a partner with whom to care for two babies who would go on to populate Ember. The tone of the woman’s account is sad and scared; she isn’t sure if Ember is the correct answer to the problems aboveground, but she’s certain that something must be done. Her account is instrumental to Lina and Doon’s coming of age and growing understanding of who they are, as it connects them to a part of their history they didn’t know about and shows them clearly where they came from.
