What are the themes of The Crucible?

The main action of the play takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692 during the Salem witch trials. The Crucible is set in a Puritan colony where fear of witchcraft spreads through the community and leads to mass accusations and executions.
Arthur Miller wrote the play in the early 1950s, and he intentionally connected the events of 1692 to the anti-Communist hysteria of his own time. Miller used the witch trials to reflect the atmosphere of fear and suspicion during the McCarthy era.
