The Depository Bank of Zurich provides users with complete anonymity, meaning they can drop items in safe-deposit boxes without attaching their names. Now, Sophie maneuvers the taxi through a series of gates using Saunière’s triangular key. The building itself is an imposing block of steel. Inside, they find a guard who hurriedly turns off his television. Recognizing Sophie’s key, he directs them to the elevator. Once Langdon and Sophie are gone, the guard calls night manager and Interpol to tell them two fugitives he saw on the news just entered the bank.

Langdon and Sophie descend. An elderly host leads them to a private room with refreshments despite the late hour. The host isn’t surprised that this is their first visit to the bank: many people inherit keys, whose boxes are leased for years in advance. He shows Sophie and Langdon how to retrieve their box by inserting their key and account number into the console, prompting the system to robotically deliver their items. The host answers a quick call, after which he seems nervous. Sophie confesses they don’t have an account number. The host promises someone will help them, leaves quickly, and locks them in. Across town, Fache tells Collet Interpol received a tip: the fugitives are at a bank.
