Meanwhile, Vernet calls the bank’s night manager. The police are threatening to call in Fache and a warrant if they aren’t allowed inside. Vernet asks the manager to turn on the armored truck’s tracking device, claiming Sophie and Langdon stole it. He omits his part in that escape. Activating the transponder will automatically alert the police, letting them know the bank has a problem. Vernet insists the manager do it anyway. Miles away, the GPS tracker hidden on the truck’s undercarriage begins transmitting a signal.
While Vernet’s motivations are still unclear, he is willing to risk the police knowing of his involvement if it means catching the fugitives and securing what they stole. This again calls his motives into question, as it’s unclear whether he’s acting selfishly or whether he genuinely wants to protect Saunière’s secret. Neither Sophie nor Langdon has considered whether the truck can be tracked, amplifying the suspense.
