The Da Vinci Code: Chapter 59 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Bishop Aringarosa calls the Opus Dei Headquarters in New York to check his messages. The receptionist confirms an urgent message is waiting, but the caller provided no name, only a number. Assuming this was the Teacher, Aringarosa returns the call as he boards the small plane which will take him to France. A woman answers, thanking him for calling the French Judicial Police. Confused, Aringarosa holds until a gruff man comes on the line, saying he and the bishop have much to talk about.
It is safe to assume the French police officer who called Aringarosa is Fache, meaning one of two things: either he has somehow connected Aringarosa to Saunière’s death, or he is the Teacher. By withholding their full conversation, the novel increases the reader’s suspense while also encouraging readers to consider who may have connections to whom.
