Back at Teabing’s château, Fache is furious that Collet let Langdon escape again, even though he understands Collet’s reasons for disobeying orders, given available evidence. An agent informs Fache that Vernet from the bank called. He’ll cooperate with police if they keep his bank’s name out of the papers and recover whatever the fugitives stole. Another agent has learned that Teabing has a private jet which recently made an unscheduled take-off. Fache leaves Collet in charge while he investigates this new lead.
Once again, Langdon’s improbable escape infuriates Fache because it suggests he is incompetent and sullies his reputation as a powerful lawman. Having failed to bend Langdon and Sophie to his will, Vernet now seeks to work with Fache in order to protect himself and the bank from legal ramifications. Vernet’s motives are still unclear.
