Throughout the book, Greta and Einar/Lili serve as foils for each other. 

Throughout the novel, Greta is described as a consistent character, one who is almost always willing to sacrifice her own wants and needs to attend to Einar/Lili's. Lili, both before and after her transition, compares herself to her consistent companion, like in this moment in Chapter 23:

Now—now that even her government papers claimed she was Lili Elbe—she felt certain Greta wouldn't change. It was what got Lili through it [...] Lili was always changing, but not Greta, never Greta.
