Ding Yi is a physicist who is chosen to be the first person to examine the Trisolaran probe. Before he examines that probe, he wisely advises ships nearby to prepare to evacuate, which saves the lives of the people on those ships when the probe begins targeting the Earth’s fleet. Ding Yi, however, dies during that attack.
