A day after the probe is captured, Ding Yi inspects it. He is accompanied by three military officers. When they reach the probe, they’re surprised that it remains smooth and mirrorlike no matter how much they magnify its surface. There is also not a single scratch on the probe. Ding Yi then slams a rock pick into it, but nothing happens. On closer examination, Ding Yi says the probe is made out of a material that makes the most impenetrable material on Earth look like paper. A few moments later, Ding Yi tells everyone to run. Another officer chimes in and tries to tell the fleet to evacuate. The fleet doesn’t hear the command, though, as communications have gone down. A light rises from the tip of the probe. The heat from that light eviscerates Ding Yi, the three officers, and their entire ship.
This passage shows that Luo Ji, Shi Qiang, Zhang Beihai, and Ding Yi were right to be skeptical. The probe is not a gift from the Trisolarans and instead is a threat to the surrounding human spacecraft, as it kills Ding Yi and the officers accompanying him. That shows how premature humanity’s hope and optimism were. The full extent of the probe’s powers and the Trisolaran plan remains to be seen, but it seems possible that humanity’s optimism and hope were the result of hubris and weren’t justified by the evidence available.

At first, the remaining ships in Earth’s fleet think that the probe must have self-destructed, but the probe begins flying toward them and ruptures one of the ships, and the ship explodes. The probe moves through the ship so easily that it’s as if it’s passing through a shadow. The probe passes through and destroys all 100 ships in the first row of the fleet’s formation in just over a minute. The commanders of the fleet are in shock. Because many of them believe that the Trisolaran probe self-destructed, they don’t know what is causing the damage.
The probe reveals that it is significantly more technologically advanced than humans thought, as it destroys 100 ships in a minute. That suggests that humanity might be grievously outmatched by Trisolaran technology, showing that humanity’s hope and optimism have been unwarranted in every way.

Eventually, evacuation orders are issued, but by that time, the second and third rows of Earth’s formation have been destroyed. As ships evacuate, they begin crashing into one another. After 20 minutes, the probe has destroyed over half of Earth’s entire space fleet. Within 30 minutes, the probe has destroyed the entire fleet. Only two ships escape, and those are the ships that Ding Yi warned to prepare to evacuate before he inspected the probe.
