Sophon Analysis in The Dark Forest

Sophons are microscopic supercomputers developed by the Trisolarans. The Trisolarans develop the sophons by designing them at a macroscopic scale and shrinking them down after they are designed. Sophons that are in an un-shrunken state are said to be “unfolded.” The Trisolarans use the sophons to surveil humans, and they also often communicate with humans by using the sophons to broadcast text humans can see. Sophons also disrupt humans’ scientific investigations in the quantum realm, which severely limits humans’ capacity for technological development. They can send information to the Trisolarans across lightyears with no delay.
