Explanation and Analysis—Refracted Daylight:

When Mrs. Drover comes to check on her home after having fled the bombing of London, there is an arresting moment of visual imagery that shifts the narrative's focus. Until this point, the narrative has mostly outlined what Mrs. Drover's home feels like after having been inactive for a while. Suddenly, though, Mrs. Drover's attention seizes on the letter sitting on the table:

There were some cracks in the structure, left by the last bombing, on which she was anxious to keep an eye. Not that one could do anything—

A shaft of refracted daylight now lay across the hall. She stopped dead and stared at the hall table—on this lay a letter addressed to her.
