Setting
Explanation and Analysis:
The Dispossessed takes place on the fictional worlds of Urras and Annares, which are in the same universe as a number of Le Guin’s other novels. Anarres was formerly Urras’s uninhabited moon, home to seasonal mining colonies. Around 200 years before the events of the novel, a group of revolutionaries settled Anarres to form an anarchist society and established a mutual quarantine in agreement with Urras. The revolutionaries were Odonians, followers of Odo, a philosopher and activist who envisioned an anarcho-syndicalist society freed from the limitations of capitalism.
