Albert, Prince of Wales Character Analysis

Albert, Prince of Wales is Queen Victoria’s son and the heir to the British throne. Though Albert (whom Victoria calls “Bertie”) never actually appears in the play, his presence is felt through Lady Sarah, who conveys to Victoria the Prince of Wales’s demand that the queen must demote Abdul Karim from his high station in the royal court. Though Victoria initially resists, writing Albert off as “racially prejudiced” and “jealous,” when Lady Sarah warns that Albert could potentially depose the queen should she refuse to heed his warning, Victoria relents. After Victoria’s death (and after the events of the play), Albert would go on to become king of the British empire, taking on the title of King Edward VII.
