Explanation and Analysis—Enkidu as Foil:
Enkidu is a foil for Gilgamesh. Enkidu's relationship with Gilgamesh is in many ways the focus of The Epic of Gilgamesh, with Enkidu created by Aruru in order to be Gilgamesh's "equal," "his own reflection, his second self." Indeed, Enkidu is quite similar to Gilgamesh, crafted by Aruru from clay just like Gilgamesh and far stronger and more beautiful than any other mortal. However, like reflections themselves, Enkidu is in many ways the inverse of Enkidu: Enkidu is originally of the wild, representing the strength and power of the natural world, while Gilgamesh is king of Uruk. He is only made civil by Shamhat and, in a sense, Gilgamesh.
