The Epic of Gilgamesh has a serious, matter-of-fact tone, which grounds its otherwise outlandish subject matter. Despite being a work of fiction, The Epic of Gilgamesh reads as if it was a historically accurate account of divine power on the material plane. The story emphasizes the strength of mortal beings against the divine, even if Gilgamesh is born of the goddess Ninsun and is only one-third mortal. Gilgamesh's ability to persevere against gods and goddesses—i.e., through prevailing against Ishtar by killing the Bull of Heaven—creates a tone of resilience and fortitude toward the underdog as he fights fully divine beings.
