Along with Don Gilbert, Doña Sabine is one of the wealthiest Haitians in Amabelle’s town in the Dominican Republic. She and Don Gilbert occupy a privileged social position until the coming massacre threatens them along with all the other Haitians. They send away their guards for fear that the guards might turn on them, and although they shelter some people in their home, Amabelle wonders if they’ll even be able to protect themselves.
