Congressman John Lewis was a member of the original Freedom Riders activist group in the Civil Rights era. His determination to sacrifice his life in the fight for equal rights makes him a hero and role model to the Freedom Writers. The Freedom Writers are able to meet him before giving a speech at the Capitol, and experience this as a deep honor.
