The German Ideology

Empiricism is a philosophy which argues that genuine knowledge can only be derived from empirical evidence rather than abstract reason. Although Marx and Engels consider empiricism more in touch with reality than German idealism, they still argue that empiricism lacks the systematic worldview of true materialism needed to make sense of history.
