The tone of “The Gilded Six-Bits” is an empathetic one. Though the story is narrated from a removed third-person perspective, the narrator seems to feel for the characters. For example, when Joe and Missie May are happy and in love at the start of the story, the narrator’s tone is likewise joyful and bright. Then, after Joe walks in on Missie May having an affair with the wealthy Slemmons, the tone shifts into a much sadder register. Though Missie May is the one “at fault” for hurting Joe—and damaging the trust in their relationship—the narrator does not judge her, but communicates the depths of her regret and shame over her actions, encouraging readers to sympathize with her in the process.
