The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store

The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store

by James McBride
Rusty is a young, Black Chicken Hill resident who is on good terms with both the so-called Pottstown Association of Negro Men (comprised of Nate Timblin, Reverend Ed Spriggs, himself, and his uncle) and with Fatty Davis. Rusty is, like pretty much every other man on the Hill, in love with Paper, but she doesn’t pay much attention to him. He is supposed to help Fatty Davis and Big Soap with the plumbing job but fails to show up.
