Dede Antanas is Jurgis's father. He is eager to work but too old and infirm to obtain a job. Out of dedication to his family, he agrees to pay a man a third of his wages in exchange for finding him a job. He works tirelessly, and his job's harsh conditions soon prove too much for him: he wastes away and dies.
