Sam Character Analysis

Sam is an African-American cook at Henry’s diner. Sam is the target of racial slurs from both George and Al and is evidently not taken seriously by anyone. After Max and Al leave and he is untied, Sam tries to distance himself from the situation by repeating that he doesn’t “want any more of that” and doesn’t “like any of it at all.” Sam understands that becoming any more involved in the situation would be a serious risk to himself, both physically and emotionally. He also tries to warn Nick to “stay out of it” instead of going to warn Ole Andreson, but his well-intentioned advice is quickly dismissed. From that point on, Sam refuses to even listen to anything Nick or George has to say about what happened.
