Explanation and Analysis:

The Longest Memory is a work of historical fiction. Despite being written and published in 1994, the story is set between 1790 and 1810 on a fictional plantation in Virginia. Although The Longest Memory is a work of fiction, the story belongs to a tradition of 18th- and 19th-century autobiographical slave narratives like Frederick Douglass's Narrative of Frederick Douglass and Solomon Northup's 12 Years a Slave. These works, and others like it, have influenced Black American writing through the 20th century, including writers like James Baldwin and Maya Angelou.
