D'Aguiar's The Longest Memory is set on Mr. Whitechapel's fictional Virginian plantation. Different sections of the novel are set in different places on or around Mr. Whitechapel's plantation: to name just a few, the enslaved people's living quarters, Mr. Whitechapel's house, Sanders Senior's house, and a nearby club where plantation owners congregate. D'Aguiar makes use of many different settings as he does many different perspectives, painting a comprehensive portrait of the horror of slavery from distinct points of view.
