Dr. Renard is a respected doctor and friend of Colonel Ducroix who lives in the fictional French town of Lancy. The only honest rich man in town, Ducroix helps the detectives (Gabriel Syme, the Professor, Dr. Bull, and Inspector Ratcliffe) escape by lending them one of his three cars and his antique lantern. But, like the peasant and the innkeeper, he ultimately joins forces with the Secretary (including by lending them his other two cars). All three do this because they are honest men who want to see law, order, and justice prevail over the fleeing detectives, whom they believe to be criminals.
