The innkeeper is an elderly French man and friend of Colonel Ducroix who runs the country inn “Le Soleil d’Or.” He helps Ducroix and the detectives (Gabriel Syme, the Professor, Dr. Bull, and Inspector Ratcliffe) escape the Secretary’s encroaching army by lending them horses. But later, when he learns that this army works for the police and is trying to bring the detectives to justice, he gives them horses, too, and then joins them.
