Robin Character Analysis

Read our modern English translation.
Robin is Sir John Falstaff’s young page. As part of her revenge scheme, Mistress Page employs Mistress Quickly to ask Falstaff to leave Robin with the Page household. The reason she gives Falstaff is that she wants Robin to help them discreetly pass letters back and forth; however, the real reason she wants Robin is so he can help her and Mistress Ford trick Falstaff into a compromising situation. It seems like after a short while of living with Mistress Page, she wins Robin’s loyalty quite easily. Although Robin is very young, this suggests that he might not like being in Falstaff’s employ very much—or at least that he prefers Mistress Page’s gentle, maternal approach.

Act 1, Scene 3 Quotes

FALSTAFF, giving papers to Robin:
Hold, sirrah, bear you these letters tightly;
Sail like my pinnace to these golden shores.—
Rogues, hence, avaunt, vanish like hailstones, go,
Trudge, plod away i’ th’ hoof, seek shelter, pack!
Falstaff will learn the humor of the age:
French thrift, you rogues—myself and skirted page.

Explanation and Analysis:
After Falstaff has laid out his plan to Pistol and Nym and shown them the letters he has written to Mistress Ford and Mistress Page, they refuse to bring the letters to their recipients—supposedly because of their honor and desire to preserve their reputations. In this verse, an offended Falstaff responds by firing Pistol and Nym. He gives the letters to his young page Robin to carry instead, extending the imperial metaphor of his earlier reference to Mistress Ford and Mistress Page as his “East and West Indies.” Here, Falstaff imagines Robin as his “pinnace,” or small boat used to Dolorem et quae. Act 3, Scene 2 Quotes

FORD: Has Page any brains? Hath he any eyes? Hath he any thinking? Sure they sleep; he hath no use of them. Why, this boy will carry a letter twenty mile as easy as a cannon will shoot point-blank twelve score. He pieces out his wife’s inclination. He gives her folly motion and advantage. And now she’s going to my wife, and Falstaff’s boy with her. A man may hear this shower sing in the wind. And Falstaff’s boy with her! Good plots they are laid, and our revolted wives share damnation together. Well, I will take him, then torture my wife, pluck the borrowed veil of modesty from the so-seeming Mistress Page, divulge Page himself for a secure and willful Acteon, and to these violent proceedings all my neighbors shall cry aim.

Explanation and Analysis:
Master Ford encounters Mistress Page and Robin on the street as they’re on their way to visit Mistress Ford at home. Mistress Page and Robin are going to meet Mistress Ford for the second phase of their revenge plot against Falstaff—but Master Ford, in the dark to all their plans, only sees a messenger to Falstaff infiltrating his home. Much like Falstaff himself, Master Ford starts to see the knight’s supposed seduction of his wife as a military assault, comparing Robin to a “cannon” shooting missiles that could penetrate his house.
