After Anderton sees that the Precrime system he created has predicted that he will murder a man named Leopold Kaplan within the next week, he grabs the card with this prediction on it (the only evidence) and tries to flee from police headquarters. His wife Lisa—also a police officer—notices him leaving and stops him.
After Anderton flees from police headquarters—realizing that he could be arrested at any point for the Precrime prediction that he will murder a man named Leopold Kaplan—he hurries home to pack and go on the run. While at home, he is captured by a group of armed men and forced into a car. The narrator uses imagery in this moment to capture the unsettling nature of this experience for Anderton, as seen in the following passage:
Unlock with LitCharts A+Anderton was still trying futilely to grasp the implications of what had happened, when the car came to a rutted side road, turned off, and descended into a gloomy sub-surface garage. Someone shouted an order. The heavy metal lock grated shut and overhead lights blinked on. The driver turned off the car motor.
“You’ll have reason to regret this,” Anderton warned hoarsely, as they dragged him from the car. “Do you realize who I am?”
“We realize,” the man in the brown overcoat said.
When being transported back from Kaplan’s house, Anderton muses over everything Kaplan shared with him about how Anderton’s wife Lisa and new assistant Witwer are in cahoots, trying to set Anderton up for Kaplan’s murder. His thoughts are interrupted when the car he is in suddenly crashes into a truck. The narrator uses imagery to capture the chaos of this scene, as seen in the following passage:
Unlock with LitCharts A+Under Anderton the seat lifted up and flung him face-forward against the door. Pain, sudden, intolerable, seemed to burst in his brain as he lay gasping and trying feebly to pull himself to his knees. Somewhere the crackle of fire echoed dismally, a patch of hissing brilliance winking in the swirls of mist making their way into the twisted hulk of the car.
