The Mousetrap

by Agatha Christie
Mrs. Boyle is one of the guests staying at Monkswell Manor. She’s an old, haughty woman who complains incessantly about the cold weather, the lack of proper staff at the manor, and Mollie’s poor housekeeping. She expresses disdain for and suspicion against Christopher and Mr. Paravicini, and she quarrels with Miss Casewell and Major Metcalf too. Because of her disagreeable nature, everyone strongly dislikes her. Notably, Mrs. Boyle tries to hide her connection to the Longridge Farm case during Sergeant Trotter’s investigation. She was one of the magistrates who placed the three Corrigan children in the care of Maureen and John Stanning, the residents of Longridge Farm who subsequently abused and neglected the children until the youngest died. When Major Metcalf reveals her involvement in the case, Mrs. Boyle denies being responsible for the children’s fates in any way and argues that she was simply trying to do her public duty. Soon after, Mrs. Boyle is murdered, and Mollie discovers her body.
