The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket

by Edgar Allan Poe
Tiger is Arthur Gordon Pym’s beloved dog. Augustus apparently smuggled Tiger aboard the Grampus, and it’s Tiger who finds Pym when Pym is trapped in the hold and nearly starving to death. Tiger’s loyalty and capability are strained, however, by the bad air and lack of food in the hold, and he goes temporarily insane and attacks Pym, who is able to subdue and trap him. Tiger recovers once outside and helps Pym, Augustus, and Peters retake control of the Grampus, but his fate afterward is left unknown; most likely he is washed overboard and drowned by the massive storm that wrecks the ship.

Chapter 2 Quotes

As upon a former occasion, my conceptions were in a state of the greatest indistinctness and confusion after leaving the mattress. For a long time I found it nearly impossible to connect any ideas—but, by very slow degrees, my thinking faculties returned, and I again called to memory the several incidents of my condition. For the presence of Tiger I tried in vain to account; and after busying myself with a thousand different conjectures respecting him, was forced to content myself with rejoicing that he was with me to share my dreary solitude, and render me comfort by his caresses.

Chapter 3 Quotes

Having rubbed in the phosphorus, a brilliancy ensued as before—but this time several lines of MS. in a large hand, and apparently in red ink, became distinctly visible. The glimmer, although sufficiently bright, was but momentary. Still, had I not been too greatly excited, there would have been ample time enough for me to peruse the whole three sentences before me—for I saw there were three. In my anxiety, however, to read all at once, I succeeded only in reading the seven concluding words, which thus appeared: “blood—your life depends upon lying close.”
