Gerald is Zhaanat’s cousin. He is a jiisikid, which means that he can fly to faraway places, inhabited by other spirits. When Vera is missing, he comes to help the Paranteaus find her. After he flies for a long time, he tells the family that he has seen Vera, lying in a ditch, with a baby beside her.
