Who is Randy Adderson in The Outsiders?

Randy Adderson is a Soc (a member of the wealthy West Side group) and the best friend of Bob Sheldon, the Soc who is killed.

Randy first appears as part of the group of Socs who attack Ponyboy and Johnny, but after Bob’s death he begins to question the violence between the Socs and the greasers. He becomes more thoughtful and self-aware, deciding that fighting won’t solve anything and even refusing to take part in the big rumble. He talks privately with Ponyboy and shares his perspective, including how Bob’s life wasn’t as perfect as it seemed.

Unlike many other characters, Randy changes over the course of the story. He starts to see greasers as individuals rather than enemies and treats Ponyboy with respect, showing empathy instead of hostility. His willingness to step away from the fighting highlights the idea that understanding others is a better alternative to continuing cycles of violence.

Randy’s role shows that even someone raised in the Soc world can recognize the emptiness of the conflict, which helps push Ponyboy toward seeing both sides as fundamentally human.
