Who says "things are rough all over"?

In The Outsiders, Cherry Valance says, “Things are rough all over.” This is Cherry's response to Ponyboy at the drive-in after he tells her about the Socs brutally attacking Johnny. Ponyboy thinks the Socs have easy lives because they have money, cars, and status, but Cherry pushes back by explaining that Socs have problems too. Her comment helps Ponyboy begin to see that Socs and greasers are both human, even though their lives look very different from the outside.
