Why do the Socs beat up Ponyboy?

In The Outsiders, the Socs beat up Ponyboy because he is a greaser, and the rivalry between Socs and greasers has made boys like him targets whenever they are alone.

At the start of the novel, Ponyboy knows he is in danger walking home by himself after seeing a movie. He explains the rule of his world simply: “We get jumped by the Socs.” When the red Corvair follows him, five Socs get out, taunt him, pin him down, and threaten to cut off his hair. That threat is significant because greaser hair marks Ponyboy as part of the poorer East Side group. The Socs are attacking the identity they see on him before they know him as a person.

The later attack in the park has a more immediate trigger. Bob and his friends are drunk, angry, and jealous after Ponyboy and Johnny have spent time with Cherry and Marcia. Bob insults the greasers by asking, “You know what a greaser is” and answering, “White trash with long hair.” Ponyboy fires back, “You know what a Soc is?” and calls them “White trash with Mustangs and madras.” After that exchange, the Socs attack, and one of them forces Ponyboy’s head underwater in the fountain. Johnny kills Bob in defense of his friend because Ponyboy is being drowned.

The Socs’ violence comes from class hatred, gang loyalty, and the habit of associating people with their social groups rather than seeing them as individuals. The attacks show how easily the Soc-greaser conflict turns ordinary teenage anger into life-threatening violence.
