The Priory of the Orange Tree

The Priory of the Orange Tree

by Samantha Shannon
Deceased in the novel’s present, Zāla was Ead’s mother and a Red Damsel herself. She was kind and affectionate with Ead, though the Priory of the Orange Tree doesn’t encourage mothers to be so close with their children. Mita Yedanya has always insisted that Kalyba murdered Zāla, but Ead eventually discovers that it was Mita who murdered Zāla and scapegoated Kalyba. Mita took issue, among other things, with Zāla’s belief that the Priory should protect more people than just its own.

The only way to hold it together, and to prevent it from destroying itself from within, is to keep Sabran Berethnet alive and enthro—’

‘Enough.’

Ead said no more. […]

‘You are strong-willed, Eadaz. Like Zāla was,’ the Prioress said, softer. ‘I respected our last Prioress in her decision to station you in Inys. She believed it was what the Mother wanted…but I believe otherwise. It is time to prepare. Time to look to our own, and make ready for war.’
