The Red Room

by H. G. Wells
The unnamed narrator is the protagonist of “The Red Room,” and much of his background remains mysterious for the whole of the story. He is 28 years old and has come to Lorraine Castle to dispel rumors of its haunted Red Room, though he never shares exactly why. Upon his arrival and discussion with the castle’s custodians, the narrator is brazenly self-assured that the room cannot be haunted. He is still made uneasy, however, by the custodians’ odd, senile behavior and the dark, looming furniture. Against the custodians’ warnings, the narrator makes his way to the Red Room alone, growing increasingly frightened as he goes. The darkness of the room does nothing to settle his nerves, and though he has the protection of a revolver and the knowledge that he is completely alone, he still becomes so frenzied he knocks himself unconscious in his attempt to escape. He wakes up in the care of the custodians and admits that the room is in fact haunted, albeit not by anything supernatural. He reveals that the Red Room is haunted by fear, and while he believes he was correct about the room’s lack of ghosts, he ends the story with a shaken world view.
