Chapter 12: The Gentleman From Tralfamadore
Explanation and Analysis—Broken Chain of Fate:

The empty choke chain in the novel functions as a powerful metaphor for the termination of Winston Niles Rumfoord’s hyper-organized existence. It is also a strong example of personification. The chain originally symbolized Rumfoord’s absolute control, which extended even to his dog, Kazak, who was typically held by the chain during materializations. Kazak’s abrupt departure, sent ahead on a "great mission to nowhere and nothing" by the universal forces, leaves the chain empty, symbolizing the breaking of this physical link of control.

The following passage details the chain’s collapse:

Rumfoord let the empty choke chain slip from his fingers. The chain expressed deadness, made a formless sound and a formless heap, was a soulless slave of gravity, born with a broken spine.
