El Mulato Character Analysis

El Mulato is the Colonel’s fierce right-hand man, a rebel soldier who accompanies him in battle. When the Colonel sends El Mulato to kidnap Belisa Crepusculario so that he can ask her to write him a political speech, El Mulato treats her roughly, throwing her on the back of his horse and waiting many hours to give her food or water. However, as Belisa works on the Colonel’s speech, El Mulato starts to notice her physical attractiveness and lust after her. When she leaves after whispering her two secret words in the Colonel’s ear, El Mulato follows her for a moment, but Belisa already has her sights set on the Colonel, and she casually rejects him. Later, as El Mulato watches the Colonel’s thoughtful and withdrawn state worsen and starts to feel the sting of Belisa’s rejection of his own advances, El Mulato resents and fears Belisa’s artistic power so much that he would attack her if the Colonel weren’t there to intervene.
