Nicole—whom Belly initially refers to as Red Sox girl due to Nicole’s Red Sox hat—is an older girl in Cousins who briefly dates Conrad. Belly finds her impossibly mature, and she’s extremely jealous of the hold Nicole seems to have over Conrad. Because of this, it’s impossible to tell if Nicole is really as “fake” and vacuous as Belly insists she is. Nicole isn’t kind to Belly, though again, Belly is never nice to her, so Nicole’s real personality remains a mystery throughout the novel.

I could tell he didn’t believe it. I didn’t either. Because the truth was, when I looked at Conrad, all I felt was a yearning that never went away. It was the same as it had always been. Here I had this really great guy who actually liked me, and deep down inside I was still hung up on Conrad. There, that was the real truth. I had never really let go. I was just like Rose on that stupid makeshift raft.

Cam has just called Belly out: he recognizes that Belly is using their relationship to make Conrad jealous and attract his attention. This marks the first time that anyone calls Belly out on her manipulative behavior and lets her know that it’s unappreciated and unkind—and it forces Belly to take a look at herself and admit to herself that she’s still in love with Conrad, no matter what she might say.
