Explanation and Analysis:
At the beginning of Book 3 (and thus the beginning of The Two Towers), the mood is utterly dire. The Fellowship of the Ring separates after an attack by the Orcs leads to Boromir's death. Frodo and Samwise flee, Merry and Pippin are captured, and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are left to decide which of their friends to follow.
