Elizabeth Ramsell is the Lonely One’s most recent victim. At the beginning of the story, she has been missing for an undisclosed period of time, and Lavinia and Francine find her dead body when they cross through the ravine on their way to the movies. Elizabeth’s dead body—immobile, eyes fixed, and tongue hanging out—metaphorizes the silencing of women that the Lonely One carries out during his reign of terror.
