Frank Dillon, a neighbor within the community, jumps out from behind a tree to scare Lavinia, Francine, and Helen as they walk into town. A minor figure, Frank nevertheless helps build suspense throughout the story. As with the man in the theater who is mistakenly identified as the Lonely One, Frank reminds the reader of the pervasive threat Lavinia, her friends, and the community in general face while the serial killer is still on the loose. Like Frank, the killer could always be just around the next corner, hidden from view.
