The Druggist Character Analysis

While the druggist is a minor character, he nevertheless plays an important role: he is the one who provides a mysterious stranger, presumably the Lonely One, with Lavinia’s address. As such, he seals Lavinia’s fate at the end of the story. However, he is not a malicious figure. When he realizes he shouldn’t have revealed Lavinia’s residence to the man, he feels guilty and tries to compensate by giving Lavinia a bag of candy for free.

The Whole Town’s Sleeping Quotes

“We’re all overwrought,” said Lavinia. “I simply won’t take a taxi if you get one. If I’m the next victim, let me be the next. There’s all too little excitement in life, especially for a maiden lady thirty-three years old, so don’t you mind if I enjoy it.”

Explanation and Analysis:
Lavinia, Francine, and Helen visit the town’s drugstore for candy before the movies, and the druggist admits that he told a mysterious stranger where Lavinia lives. Lavinia’s friends are alarmed, and Helen announces that she is calling a taxi to take all of them home, but Lavinia refuses. Up until this point, Lavinia’s dismissal of her friends’ more cautious suggestions seem reasonable. She uses logic to make decisions, arguing, for example, that the Lonely One won’t stay in the vicinity while the police conduct their investigation. But now a new motive for staying out emerges: she enjoys excitement and thrills. Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Ad dolor at. Quia aperiam eligendi.
