The Whole Town’s Sleeping Summary

A mysterious serial killer, the Lonely One, is terrorizing a small, tranquil town in the Midwest. Lavinia Nebbs, a confident and independent woman, decides to spend the evening out and then walk home alone despite multiple warnings about the killer. Unlike Francine and Helen, the friends who join her at the movies and the drugstore, Lavinia is seemingly unconcerned about the potential threat, even though the killer is preying on women. Rather, she is determined to maintain her routine and refuses to let fear dictate her actions.

On their way to pick up Helen, Lavinia and Francine are immediately reminded of the Lonely One’s presence when they discover the body of a murdered woman in the ravine that divides the two parts of their town. Despite their discovery, Lavinia and Francine get Helen and continue with their plans. Before the movie, they go to the drugstore for candy, where Lavinia learns from the druggist that a strange man was asking where she lived earlier in the day. Lavinia still isn’t worried, and she and her friends attend the movie.

After the film and another visit to the drugstore, the friends walk down the dark streets near midnight. Lavinia’s friends suggest she stay with them overnight so she doesn’t have to cross through the ravine alone, but Lavinia dismisses their concerns with bravado. However, once she enters the ravine, she begins hearing footsteps on the bridge behind her that make her anxious. Afraid that the Lonely One is stalking her, she begins to run.

Lavinia, now certain she is being chased by the Lonely One, escapes the ravine and makes it safely home. However, after she locks her front door behind her, she hears a man in the living room clearing his throat. Though Lavinia’s fate isn’t shown, it is implied that Lavinia will be the Lonely One’s next victim.
